Would You Settle For Free Long Distance?

O.K. So you cant get money for nothing and chicks for free.... But you can get free long distance.  After searching the “Net”, we found two services that offer free long distance in exchange for very little of your time and effort.

Now, in searching the “Net” we found tons of hits for free long distance.  So first we eliminated all the ones that offered things like “Fridays free”, etc., or buy 30 min., get 30 min. free.  We then eliminated all the ones that stated, “we are not a multi level marketing plan, we are a referral network” (looks like a duck, quacks like a duck...).  After all, when we mean free we mean FREE.... As in No Money, Not A Penny!

So, can you really call for free?

Yes you can!

Now, we are not talking about Internet calls (voice over IP).  You know, the services that make you call from a computer connected to the Net, to a computer connected to the Net.

No, we wanted phone to phone.  Be it pay phone, cell phone, office phone, or calling Grandma in small town USA.

So how did we do?  We found lots of interesting offers and some downright nutty marketing scams.....

Then we found TWO REAL DEALS!

The first one is from a company called Broadpoint.  The have a deal called “Free Call”.  They refer to the service as “sponsored communication”.  That means someone else pays for the call.  The service is easy to use and access.  The most time consuming part is signing up at their web site.  Now, don’t go thinking that it’s really hard or time consuming.  I completed the sign up in about four minutes.

After signing up, the company gives you a toll free number to call in on.  After dialing in you enter your pin number.  Then you get to earn your free calls.  Every 15-second commercial you listen to, gives you two minutes of phone time.  You can accumulate your time to make a long call, but unfortunately you cannot “bank” your time.  So if you need to make a one-hour call, you can build up the minutes; but if you get an answering machine or are on the line a very short time, you lose the minutes you built up.  Should your time be running out, about 30 seconds before the clock runs out, you get a warning ‘beep”, so you can finish up the call.

The main thing to remember is not to share your pin number.  Not even with other family members.  Each person wishing to use the service must have his or her own pin number.  Now this does not mean that the family can’t call grandma and pass the phone from person to person.  It is really very simple.  The person placing the call must use his or her own pin number.

The other service we found is called Free For All. At this time Free For All is in the building stages.  I do not want to say they are not yet functioning because their web site is up, and they have set up some “free calls” on sponsored calling cards.  But when they are up and running the basics will be the same as Free Call. The big difference is both the caller and the person you are calling hear the ads.  That’s right, everyone hears the ads. So make sure you don’t mind if the person you’re calling hears the ads.  Also make sure the person you’re calling does not mind hearing the ads.  They may not want to.  This service is also supposed to do targeted ads.  Tailored to your likes etc.  But things are still in the “works” so to say.  It may pay to bookmark their page and check on things from time to time.  In the future the company is hoping to offer not only “Free” long distance, but also they hope to put some cash back into your pocket!

That’s Net not Com, there is another company at Com.

Personally I think I liked Broadpoint’s Free Call idea the best.  The main reason is only I hear the ads.  I don’t want the people I’m calling to know I’m too cheap to pay for the call.

Now if you’re thinking “Who Cares”, after all you are only paying about 6 or 7 cents a minute for your long distance, so who needs “Free”?

Think about this.  When was the last time you got stuck with a long distance bill from the hotel you stayed at?  Free would have been nice!  Or what about that relative that always calls collect?  Or your kids calling collect, as they don’t have money for the pay phone.  Hey, let them use Free Call or Free For All!
