How The Sony Mavica Is A Top Selling Camera
A Marketing Lesson

If you a reader of any high tech or computer magazines you have no doubt seen reports comparing different digital cameras to each other. In almost every comparison of picture quality I have seen other cameras do better than the Sony Mavicas.

So why is it that at every trade show I go to I see more people using the Sony’s than any other camera?

First, it is not a bad camera. The image quality is very good. It is just not the most superior imaging camera on the market. So, again why are so many people in the computer industry buying and using them?

One word: USABILITY.

Sony did its homework in designing this camera. In the real world several factors come into play on making a purchasing decision. For most of us, we will choose the product that is the most usable over one that is "better" if the "better" one is just not as usable. After all if you're not going to, or can’t use it, it does not matter how good it is.

This is where Sony is winning the war. For a very large number of users the Sony is the most usable or practical camera for them. The Sony is the only camera on the market that uses the good old-fashioned floppy disk to store images on.

Floppies, they're everywhere. Can you think of anyone that does not have a floppy disc drive on their computer (other then those poor i-Mac folks)? That’s what makes the Sony’s such a hit. You don’t have to download to a computer. No need to buy expensive extra "flash memory" cards. Just put in another (cheap) floppy. At one show the BizNet Crew went to, we discovered that even though we brought the Mavica, we forgot to bring a single floppy disk!!. No problem. On registering we were given a show guide on floppy disc! Oh, boy, free "film".

At another show we bumped into Martha Stewart. One of our writers had her picture taken with Ms. Stewart. After snapping the shot, Ms. Stewart asked for a copy of the picture to be sent to her. Now with any other camera, you would have to download to a computer then copy it to a floppy and so on. With the Sony, we made a copy right on the spot and in under one minute Ms. Stewart had her copy.

So, the marketing lesson for everyone is" being the best does not mean being the best seller. For a product to truly succeed it must be the most usable.

If you're in a business that sells goods to the public, the best way to make a sale is to take the time to find out about your customer's needs. Then, match those needs to the product that meets those needs.
