The Internet is definitely a tool for advertising. It is a way for a customer to view a product, service or information at any hour of the day. Yes, we have all heard this before. However, is it a place for just anyone to put up a "shingle"?

Many people have no idea what it takes to develop, market and advertise a web site. They just know they need to be on the Internet. However, they often don’t even know how to use their own home computers. They seek out good web developers to build them great sites and when they hear the amount and time it will take for all the components of a great web site to come together; they think they are being conned.

However, a great web site developer can do all the developing, and help with the marketing and advertising. It often takes time and I mean a lot of time to "make" a great web site (often more than a month). The amount of time and the skill it takes to bring the whole site together is the factor that brings up the price. Sure anyone can go to the local computer store and pick up software to make their own, but an amateur would never know the secrets to connecting all the pages and graphics, of how to correctly list the site on search engines, and where to advertise on the "net". A good question for these folks is "Would you do your own dental work?"

To obtain a presence on the internet one needs the web site (#1), the proper placement on search engines (#2), and to actively participate in advertising (#3), which includes a weekly posting (done correctly) to news groups on the "net ", and a personal commitment in placing the web address on all forms of advertising they do, supplying the web information (e-mail, web address, etc.) on all business related literature and products. The later two are the interested parties’ responsibility, but a good web developer should demonstrate how to do this when the time comes. One just needs to be patient through the whole process.

The people who just don’t understand the whole process, often become impatient, blame the initial web developer, decide they have made the wrong decision and switch web developers (usually just anyone who says, "Oh, I can fix that site!"). These people will most likely be disillusioned, end up with an inferior site and often drop from the net all together.

A web site and presence on the web are valuable tools to help sell product, inform about a service, or provide information. A person needs to be committed to locating a quality web developer, investing at least $2,000.00 on the development of their web site, and to take an active role in the advertising of the finished site. If all of these factors are meet, a web presence should help in reaching the people the web site’s product, services or information is geared toward.
