UPDATE: Y2K Compliancy & QuickBooks |
First Off; Just What Is The
"Y2K" Bug
Many
businesses and nonprofit organizations rely on computers to manage information.
Until recently, storage space for data was very limited, so programmers
generally used only two digits to represent a year. For example, April 5, 1959
becomes 4/5/99; the "19" has been dropped. As a result, many computer
systems will not properly process dates after 1999. To make matters worse, year
2000 is a leap year. Some software may not be designed to deal with February 29,
2000…Intuit
Now
To Our Article:
QuickBooks
And That Y2K Thing
When
QuickBooks 99 came out the beginning of 1999, I said "WHAT! ANOTHER
UPGRADE?". Nothing like shelling out more money for yet another upgrade!
Come on why should I even care. Well if you’re like me, and really rely
on QuickBooks, and you’re not finding yourself looking forward to another
upgrade, then you should read on. Because, upgrading may just be the best
and smartest thing you could do.
Now
what good reason can QuickBooks give me to spend more dollars? Well, after
checking it out I determined it was not only a very good product upgrade for my
business, but in fact a critical one. Let me explain. You may just find
that maybe it is for you, too. Especially if you need to be Y2K Compliant.
Lets look at the facts to see if you
to need to make this upgrade or not:
Per Intuit (QuickBooks & Quicken
developers), if you are currently using:
1. Windows v4.0 or below
2. DOS - Any version
3. Mac v3.0 or below
Your version will not be Y2K
compliant; they no longer Support these versions!
Therefore, yes, you will have to upgrade.
PER INTUIT, If you have:
WINDOWS Version 6.0
“Compliant, if you install
maintenance release 3 (R3) or higher.” (To learn which Release you have, not
which Version, press 1 while holding down the CTRL key. Your QuickBooks
production information and release number will appear.)
WINDOWS Version 5.0
(except Tax Table Service, Payroll,
and Online Banking features)
“You are Compliant, if you install
maintenance release 7 (R7) or higher. (To learn which Release you have, not
which Version, press 1 while holding down the CTRL key. Your QuickBooks
production information and release number will appear.)”
WINDOWS Version 5.0
QuickBooks and QuickBooks Pro, version
5.0, for Windows (Tax Table Service)
“You are NOT
Compliant: See the information below about solutions that meet Intuit’s Year
2000 Compliant Standard.
What are possible solutions?
Choose one of the following two solutions:
1.
Purchase the latest version of QuickBooks or QuickBooks Pro to take advantage of
additional new features.
OR
1.
Receive your free QuickBooks Y2K update for Windows. If you are a current
registered subscriber to the QuickBooks Tax Table Service for Windows,” .you
should have received your free update in July 1999…. If you did not receive
this update, or if you purchased or registered a copy of this version after June
1, 1999, contact Intuit.
(Payroll without
subscription to Tax Table Service)
WINDOWS Version
5.0 - QuickBooks and QuickBooks Pro, version 5.0, for Windows
“Compliant, if
you install maintenance release 7 (R7) or higher. (To learn which Release you
have, not which Version, press 1 while holding down the CTRL key. Your
QuickBooks production information and release number will appear.)
What are possible
solutions? Per Intuit:
Choose one of the following solutions:
1.
Purchase the latest version of QuickBooks or QuickBooks Pro to take advantage of
additional new features, along with a subscription to QuickBooks Tax Table
Service….
OR
2. Subscribe to QuickBooks Tax Table
OR
3.
Install the free maintenance release 7 (R7) patch and continue to do payroll
manually. The Tax Table Service will not support QuickBooks 5.0 and below after
December 31, 1999. Therefore, the tax withholdings on each paycheck and payroll
forms such as the 940 and the 941 have to continue to be done manually with
version 5.0. To install the R7 patch, chose one of the following options:
a.
Download the R7 patch at no charge, OR
b. Order
the R7 patch.
c. If you use
the trial version of QuickBooks 5.0 for Windows, you may purchase the full
version of the latest QuickBooks software as discussed above. (However, the free
patch discussed above is only available to registered users of the full version
of QuickBooks 5.0 for Windows.) As always, the latest versions of QuickBooks and
QuickBooks Pro will convert data from all previous versions, including the
QuickBooks 5.0 trial version.”
FOR MAC USERS:
QuickBooks and QuickBooks Pro, version
4.0, for Macintosh
(except Tax Table Service and Payroll)
“Compliant, if you install
maintenance release M12A. Per Intuit, if you do not install maintenance release
M12A and you type a post-2000 date in any field, on or after January 1, 2000, a
fatal system error will result.”
That’s
the update we got from Intuit on QuickBooks 99 and it’s Y2K Compliant
positions. And now you have it!
