IT'S THE NAME GAME.

There is a long distance company looking to become a carrier in the state of California. They go by such names as "I don’t care", "Makes no difference", and "anyone will do", among others. Their rates are extremely high. So how do they plan on marketing themselves? It’s easy. They just wait for your telephone company to ask you which long distance carrier you want. When you say "I don’t care" -- they get you! So be careful about what you say.

THE LATEST IN JUNK

To get the latest information on the fight against junk (E-mail, Snail mail, faxes, etc.) set your browser to www.junkbuster.com or www.ftc.gov or www.fcc.gov. To "read" some of the documents from the government pages you will need to download Adobe’s acrobat reader www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html. The FCC and FTC home pages are worth spending some time at.

IS IT A JUNK FAX OR $500.00?

The Consumer Telephone Protection Act of 1991, makes it against the law to send someone a junk fax. If you are receiving junk faxes you can sue the offending party in small claims court. Minimum damages by law is set at $500.00. For more information surf on over to www.fcc.gov/ccb/consumer_news/.

PARTY LIKE IT’S 1999

PARTY LIKE IT’S 1999

Don’t worry be happy! It’s easy to find out how your computer and software will handle the year 2000. Why wait? Just change the date! This test will check your PC’s real time clock, it’s BIOS and the operating system.

1.) Set the date on your computer to December 31, 1999. Set the time to 11:55 PM. (in windows use the control panel, then date/time).

2.) Now sit and watch your system. If, in five minutes the date reads January 2000, your O.K. to go to the next step. If not you need to ask Santa for a new mother board or computer.

3.) Go back to step 1., this time after making the changes turn your system off.

4.) After 6 minutes, turn your system back on. Check the date. Is it January 1, 2000. If not then call Santa.

5.) Don’t forget to reset your clock to the right time and date. Now for reality. We still have three years to go to get to the year 2000. By that time, any computer that can’t handle the date change will be so outdated you will be looking for a reason to replace it (your 486 or 90mhz Penteum systems will be nothing compared to the 500mhz home systems that will be out before the year 2000). The businesses running proprietary DOS programs will have the real problems. But you have three years to find a fix.
