By now you have heard of or read about the New Generation of Satellite phones. If so, then if you are even remotely considering the purchase or use of one, then there is something you need to know. They don’t work in major metropolitan areas. I know you're thinking, "It will work in the middle of the desert but not in a City?" That is basically right. If you understand how Satellites work (and the fact that these phones are really meant to be used where there is no infrastructure in place for landline phones, let alone cell- based phones) it is easy to see why Satellite phones work best in the middle of nowhere.

First you need to understand that "the middle of nowhere" is where these phones were meant to be used. Not in New York, or London.... Etc.... Satellite phones are designed to be used when there is really no other communication link. And that is usually "the middle of nowhere".

Second, a Satellite phone works by "Satellite". Earth to Satellite transmission and Satellite to Earth are very "Line of Sight" dependent. Think about all the Satellite dishes out in the world today. They are all pointed at the Satellite(s) they use. If the dish can’t "See" the sky, then it can’t see the Satellite.

Now the new Satellite phones are great. A true wonder. Extremely small etc.... But they still are Satellite phones. So if you're standing on a street corner in downtown big city USA or in an office building, don’t expect your Satellite phone to work. The phone needs an Unobstructed "View" of the sky.

So, if your looking to be the first "gadget freak" to get one. Save your money. You will not be happy using it in the City. If you're going to use it out on your boat, or in your travels to "remote" locations, great. Just make sure you can see the sky.
